  Bad memories about this still exist after a few years. The proprietress called me " brat"! Back in July 2012, we stayed in a private room at this hostel and drove for a day trip to Cape Reinga. Our car broke down on the way back when it's already dark, we had to find a nearby accommodation for the night. We acknowledged the hostel and asked if they can gave a discount for the room we were not using at all. The reception didn't have authorization to do this and said she would ask the boss tomorrow. When we came back to this hostel the next day, upon checkout, i humbly asked the landlady if it's possible to give a discount as a good will, the landlady or proprietress got very angry and yelled at me: you are such a brat! Get out of here!
  Never had such bad experience anywhere in the world! Shame on you! Losing face for Kiwis.
  Not sure if it's still the same proprietress out there today, if it's still that mean landlady in her 50s, don't talk to her in case her bad temper is triggered and kick you out.
